VOLCANO HIKING IN BALI

Situated between the Indian Ocean and Pacific plates, the Indonesian archipelago boasts more than 500 volcanoes, around a hundred of which are still active. Climbing them will offer you a unique experience and spectacular scenery! Some are easily accessible, even for children, but others require a good level of physical fitness. Here are just a few of Bali's volcanoes :

Mount Agung:

Mount Agung is Bali's highest volcano and most sacred peak. It majestically dominates the island's landscape, and its summit reaches an altitude of over 3,000 metres. Considered a sacred mountain by the Balinese, Mount Agung is surrounded by spiritual beliefs and Hindu legends. It is home to the mother temple of Besakih, an important pilgrimage site and a powerful symbol of Bali's religious culture. The more adventurous among you can climb Mount Agung to be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views over the island, but you can also admire its imposing beauty from different parts of Bali. However, it should be noted that Mount Agung is an active volcano, and its activities may affect access to certain areas depending on volcanic alert levels.

Mount Batur:

Mount Batur is a sacred mountain for the people of Bali. It is an active volcano rising to an altitude of over 1,700 metres.

To reach the summit, you can take a medium-difficulty hike. Allow around 1? to 2 hours for the climb, and bear in mind that the sun rises at around 6am. If you want to enjoy a magnificent sunrise at the top of the volcano, plan your ascent accordingly!

We recommend climbing Mount Batur at sunrise with a local guide. Before sunrise, it can be quite cool, so don't forget to bring a jumper or jacket. For the climb, make sure you have suitable walking shoes.

Kawah Ijen:

Located in East Java, this volcano is truly fascinating! It's only 45 minutes from Bali by ferry and is very popular with tourists. The descent into the crater is a unique experience and gives you the chance to see the acid lake. However, beware of the sulphur, which can be harmful. It's a good idea to take plenty of water to drink and a muffler to protect yourself. This hike is ideal for enthusiasts and takes just 2 hours round trip.

What's really incredible about this volcano is that it gives off gas that creates blue flames at night. This phenomenon is unique to this volcano. The water from the acid lake seeps into the magma and continuously produces sulphur, which is how the locals earn their living. You're likely to come across sulphur transporters along the way.
